Infant Mortality.—The number of deaths of infants under one
year of age in the Borough during 1904 was 953. This is equivalent
to an infantile mortality of 155 per 1,000 births. This rate is considerably
higher than that during 1903, the deaths in that year under
one year of age having numbered 786, and the infantile mortality
being 127 per 1,000 births.
The increased infantile mortality during 1904 was undoubtedly due
to the excessive heat of the summer months of the year. The
infant mortality was lowest in the north sub.district and highest in the
south.east sub.district. The infant mortality for London during
1904 is 146 per 1,000 births.
