The common lodging houses are under the control of the
London County Council, but they are visited from time to time
by the officers of the Sanitary Authority in connection with
drainage defects, cases of infectious disease, &c.
Smoke Nuisance.
Emission of black smoke was reported on 45 occasions.
Thirty-nine reports were made by the Council's inspectors, and 6
by the Coal Smoke Abatement Society. Forty-two intimations
and 12 statutory notices were served, and 4 summonses were
taken out. As a result of the proceedings arising out of these
summonses, penalties amounting with costs to £5 8s. were
imposed.
