Other places where food is prepared have been visited on 219
occasions, improvements being required in 81 cases. One very
glaring case of food being prepared under grossly insanitary conditions
was brought to light during the year ; the kitchen of a
well-known Restaurant was found to have direct connection with
the sewer; the w.c., situated in the room directly above the
kitchen, allowed considerable leakage through on to the kitchen
floor, so much so that a receptacle stood continually there to
receive the leakage ; the walls and ceilings, the sinks, larders, and
in fact the premises generally being deplorably dirty—really in a
filthy condition. These matters have, however, all been remedied,
and at the time of writing this Report the whole of the premises
have been brought into a thoroughly up-to-date and model
sanitary condition.
Customs and Inland Revenue Acts. Application was
received during the year for certificates under these Acts with
respect to 25 tenements. When first made the application was
refused for certain suggested works to be carried out, these
requirements having been complied with, on a further application
the necessary certificates were granted for each of these premises.
House-to-House Inspection. This regular inspection was
continued during the early months of the year, until the whole of
the North Ward had been inspected, when the services of the
Inspector specially charged with this work were discontinued. A
resume of the results of this inspection of the remaining portion
of the North Ward is shown in the following tabular statements.
