Diphtheria. One hundred and forty-four cases of Diphtheria
were notified during the year, as compared with 150 and
207, respectively, in the two previous years. The distribution of
these cases was as follows:—65 in East Greenwich, 35 in West
Greenwich, 10 in St. Nicholas, 32 in Charlton, and 2 in
Kidbrooke.
Of this total number 120 were removed to the Hospital for
treatment.
There were 15 fatalities due to this disease, which gives a
case mortality of 6 per cent.
One hundred and nineteen specimens were forwarded by
Medical Practitioners for bacteriological investigation from cases
suspected to be Diphtheria. Of this number, 88 were reported
to give negative results and 31 positive.
The quarterly incidence of the disease for 1905 has been as
follows:—
1st Quarter—East Greenwich, 14 cases; West Greenwich, 7; it.
Nicholas, 3; Charlton, 9; a total of 33 cases.
2nd Quarter—East Greenwich and West Greenwich, 7 cases each;
Charlton, 5; St. Nicholas and Kidbrooke, 2
cases each; a total of 23 cases.
3 rd Quarter—East Greenwich, 11 cases; West Greenwich, 9; St
Nicholas, 4; Charlton, 3; a total of 27 cases.
4th Quarter—East Greenwich, 33 cases; West Greenwich, 12;
Charlton, 15; St. Nicholas, 1; a total of 61
