ascribed to Valvular Diseases of the Heart. The death rate of
diseases of the circulatory system equals 1·18 per 1,000.
Respiratory System. This class of disease is credited
with 201 deaths, giving a death rate of 1·95 per 1,000. Of this
number, 27 were ascribed to Acute Bronchitis, 21 of the cases
being in children under 5 years of age; 63 to Chronic Bronchitis;
99 to Pneumonia, 51 of which were in children under 5 years of
age; and other diseases of the Respiratory System, 12 deaths.
Digestive System. This class of disease is credited as the
cause of 56 deaths ; Enteritis being credited with 13, 11 being in
children under 5 years of age; Obstruction of the Bowels, 11;
Appendicitis, 4; Cirrhosis of the Liver, 13; Peritonitis, 4; and
the remaining diseases of this system, 11. The death rate from
diseases of this System was 0·54 per 1,000.
Urinary System. Forty-eight deaths were ascribed to this
class of disease, 34 of these being due to Bright's Disease.
Reproductive System. Three deaths were ascribed to be
due to diseases of generative organs, and 7 to various conditions
attendant upon, and complicating, the parturient condition.
External Causes. Accidents or negligence in various
ways have been ascribed as the cause of death in 41 cases, 6 of
which were in very young children who had been suffocated by
being overlain by their parents in bed. Drowning was the cause
of death in 7 cases; Suffocation, otherwise than being overlain in
bed, 2 cases; falls, accidents on railways, in building operations,
in vehicular traffic, &c., 19; whilst burns, scalds and poisons also
occasioned 7 deaths; Homicide was given as the cause of 1 death;
Suicide was ascribed as the cause of death in 8 cases.
