BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered during the year has
been 2,678, of which 1,368 were males, and 1,310 females. This
gives a birth rate of 25.95 per 1,000 of the population. The
birth rate for the County of London equals 27.l per 1,000, and
varies from 13.5 in the City of London, 16.2 in Hampstead, 16.8
in the City of Westminster, 19.3 in Kensington, 20.5 in Stoke
Newington, and 21.3 in Chelsea, to 32.1 in Poplar, 33.2 in
Bethnal Green, 33.3 in Bermondsey, 33.5 in Shoreditch, 34.7 in
Finsbury, and 35.3 in Stepney.
As most people are aware, the Births and Deaths Registration
Acts allow the registration of a birth to be made within the first
six weeks after the birth without any undue formalities; a birth
may be registered after the expiration of this time, but then certain
other formalities have to be gone through. Practically all births
