REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
During the year 1905 there were 37,953 tons, 5 cwts., 3 qrs.,
of house refuse collected from dwellings in the Borough and
destroyed by burning at the destructor works. The total cost
for this removal was £8,010 0s. 5d.
The house refuse is collected from dwellings by contract—that of
the North Division being collected by Mr. Walker at the rate of
4s. Id. per ton, and that of the South Division by Messrs. Abbott at
the rate of 4s. 4d. per ton. In the North Division 17,056 tons,
19 cwts., 14 lbs. were collected* at a total cost of £3,482 9s. 5d.;
in the South Division 20,896 tons, 6 cwts., 2 qrs., 14 lbs. at a total
cost of £4,527 11s. 0d. The total amount of house refuse collected
during the whole year in the two divisions of the Borough shows
an increase upon the total collected during 1904 of a little over
75 tons, at an increased cost of £29 1s. 9d.
The cost of the destruction of the house refuse, including the cost
of disposal of the residue and clinker, &c., has been estimated by the
Electrical Engineer to the Borough at 3s. 6½d. per ton; 37,953 tons,
5 cwts., 3 qrs. at this rate amounts to a total of £6,720 18s. 2½d.
The total cost then for the collection and disposal of house refuse
in the Borough, is for the North Division at 7s. 7½d. per ton,
£6,502 19s. 7½d., and that for the South Division at 7s. 10½d. per
ton is £8,227 19s. Od. For the whole Borough then the total cost
for the collection and disposal of house refuse is £14,730 18s. 7½d.
