During the past year, Miss Newton, the inspector entrusted with
the inspection of home workers' premises, made 2,929 visits.
Amongst these she found 45 domestic workshops; 90 workshops;
93 where only male outworkers were employed; and in 1336 visits,
the address was either incorrect or the home worker had left the
premises or ceased to take in home work. Thus nearly half this
officer's time was wasted. It appears to me that if employers of
outworkers were to regularly correct their lists better results still
would be obtained by the inspector.
Miss Newton made 1365 inspections of home workers' premises
during 1905, and found 453 nuisances, for the abatement of which
283 notices were served, and one prosecution was initialed. The
character of the nuisances and other details are given in annexed
table.
