Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1905

Factories.—During the year 29 factories were inspected; of
these 11 were factory laundries, and the remainder factories where
articles of clothing, furniture, &c., are manufactured, and where
female young persons are employed. In 8 factories nuisances were
found in connection with the sanitary accommodation, viz., in 3
insufficient light and ventilation; in 3 defective flush of water;
in 2 separate sanitary conveniences were not provided, though both
sexes were employed; and in 1 factory no sanitary conveniences
were provided.

Workshops.—The number of workshops registered in the
Borough at the end of December, 1905, in which articles of wearing
apparel are manufactured is 748, and where other articles are
manufactured 252, a total of 1,000, a decrease of 38 upon the
number registered at the end of 1904. The cause of this decrease
is due to a revision of the workshop register. During this revision
it was found that 38 employers had either moved from the Borough
or ceased to carry on their business. The following is a list of these
two classes of workshops with the occupations carried on therein:—
