PUBLIC HEALTH (LONDON) ACT, 1905.
(a) Complaints of Nuisances.—During the year 1905 there were
2,107 complaints received. On investigation a small percentage
only was found to be unreal, but almost the whole were proved to
be real. These were investigated and dealt with by the various
district inspectors.
(b) Infectious Disease.—There were 1,930 dwellings inspected
during 1905, owing to notifiable infectious disease occurring therein.
The nuisances discovered, although they may have had no relation
to the disease notified, were immediately brought to the notice of
the persons responsible for their abatement by means of a notice.
(c) House to House Inspections.—The number of inspections
made under this head during the year was 954, the largest number
being made in the following localities, viz: London Fields, 219;
Hackney Wick, 120; South Hackney, 103; and in the High Hill
Ferry district, 158. These inspections are independent of inspections
made in consequence of complaints of nuisance or the occurrence
of infectious disease.
The nuisances found on inspection were in the majority of
instances abated on the service of an Intimation Notice; 342 required
the service of a Statutory Notice, and 22 the issue of a summons to
appear before a Court of Summary Jurisdiction, to secure the
abatement of the nuisances found. The result of the prosecutions is
given in the appendix to this report. During the past year house
to house inspections have been continued in the Homerton and
London Fields Districts. So important is this kind of inspection
regarded by the Public Health Committee that the Borough Council,
on the Committee's recommendation, appointed the officers
temporarily engaged on this work, permanently for such work. The
following details refer to the house to house inspections made during
the year by these inspectors.
