Bakehouses.
At the end of 1902, fifty-five underground bakehouses were
in use in Fulham. Five of these have since been closed, while
in forty-nine various improvements have been carried out, in
order to comply with the requirements of the Council and
certificates of suitability, in accordance with Sec. 101 (4) of the
Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, have been granted to the
occupiers. In one instance the Council refused the application of
the occupier of an underground bakehouse for a certificate, on
the ground that the electric light had not been installed in the
bakehouse, as required by the Council, and since he continued to
occupy the bakehouse, proceedings have this year been taken
against him, and a penalty inflicted. Since then the electric
light has been installed, and the Council have been recommended
to grant a certificate.
In addition to the fifty underground bakehouses there are
twenty other bakehouses which are regularly inspected.
