VITAL AND MORTAL STATISTICS, 1902.
POPULATION.
The number of persons estimated to be living at the middle
of the year, on the supposition that the population has increased
in the same ratio as it did during the decennium 1891 to 1901,
is found to be 98,013. This figure is an increase of 1,829 upon
the corresponding figure of last year ; and as the estimated increase
of the population during the year, or, in other words, the excess of
the number of births over the number of deaths is 1,280, it leaves
549 as the number showing the excess of immigrants over emigrants.
The estimated figure above-mentioned is the basis of the various
calculations in this Report, and corresponds with the figure used
by the Registrar-General in a similar manner.

The distribution of the population throughout the Borough is as follows:—
