patient's illness by an Act of Parliament, they are bound to secrecy
in the matter.
In the event of a case of this disease being notified, visits are
paid to the premises, from time to time, as may be thought
desirable, ami handbills and leaflets containing very valuable
information for the guidance both of the patients and their friends,
are distributed, and disinfection offered.
Disinfection was thus carried out in some 28 premises on
this account.
Leaflets, giving concise bints as to the precautions which may
be taken against the communication of Consumption, have also
been published and circulated, as also notices warning against
the habit of indiscriminate spitting
In connection with these various cases of Infectious Disease,
there have been 7,296 houses inspected and reinspected. A total
number of 8,009 articles have also been disinfected as also slit
rooms on 748 separate premises; 853 articles of bedding, &c,
have been destroyed and made good as being possible foci for the
dissemination of the disease, should they again have been allowed
to have been brought into use. Various tables, giving more
details respecting these points, are included.
Taking the total number of infectious cases notified, except
cases of Chicken-pox, we find that the annual rate of notifiablecases
per 1,000 living was, in Greenwich, 9.5, the average rate for
the whole of London was 9.9 per 1,000. The proportion ranged
from 5.3 per 1,000 in Kensington, and 5.7 per 1,000 in Hampstead,
up to 13.1 per 1,000 in Stepney, and 13.4 per 1,000 in
Bethnal Green.
