Particulars as to previous Small-pox outbreaks in
Greenwich.
The following particulars have been gathered from old
Reports of the Medical Officers of Health for Greenwich: —
1899. One case of Small-pox notified and removed to
Hospital, but returned as not being Small-pox.
1896. Three cases of Small-pox, one of which proved fatal.
1895. Eight cases notified, none fatal.
1894. Nine cases notified, none fatal.
1893. One hundred and twenty-two cases notified, made up
as follows: —In the month of January, 5; February, 7; March,
22; April, 49; May, 8; June, 10; July, 5; October, 2; November,
4; December, 10. Nine of these cases proved fatal. "On
February 1st, 5 cases of Small-pox were reported to the Committee
as having occurred, 2 being sailors who had come to the Seamen's
Hospital for treatment; the other 3 cases occurring in Blackwall
Lane, and were the means of spreading the disease to the surrounding
streets. In a short time 75 cases were reported as
occurring in the streets adjoining Blackwall Lane, principally
amongst children attending the Board School in that locality,
many of which cases could be traced to the Blackwall Lane case.
The necessary sanitary precautions were observed in every case,
by inspection, disinfection, destruction of bed, bedding, &c, and
serving of notices to abate nuisances."
1892. One case, not fatal.
1891. Six cases, 2 fatal.
1890. Three cases, none fatal.

Return for the period July to December, 1901. Return made on or before the 8th of August, 1902, by Mr. A. E. Rossiter, Vaccination Officer of the several Districts of the Greenwich Union, respecting the vaccination of children whose births were registered in hit District from 1st July to 31st December, 1901, inclusive:—
