The difference in the character as to age of the population of
the various divisions of the Borough will be readily noticed from
the proportions per 1,000 population shown on the Table, from
which it will be seen that St. Nicholas has a greater proportion of
its population under 5 years than any other district, and in a
similar manner at ages 5 to 15 years ; whilst taking these two
groups of ages together, or the proportion of the respective population
being under 15 years of age, we find St. Nicholas has 393
per 1,000, East Greenwich 340 per 1,000, West Greenwich 331
per 1,000, Charlton 303 per 1,000, and Kidbrooke 172 per 1,000,
whilst the average throughout the whole of the Borough is 329 per
1,000.
West Greenwich appears to have, however, the greatest
proportion of old people, or those aged 75 years and over, having
15 per 1,000, and next in descending order comes East Greenwich
with 13 per 1,000, Charlton with 11, and Kidbrooke and St.
Nicholas with 10 each per 1,000, whilst the Borough average is 13
per 1,000.
From which it will be seen that the opinion I had previously
held as to St. Nicholas containing a larger proportionate number
of children and old persons than any other part of the Borough is
not correct in so far as the old people are concerned.
