DEATHS OF INFANTS.
Nearly 26 per cent, of the deaths from all causes were those of
infants aged less than 12 months ; for out of 4,589 infants born alive,
710 died before reaching the age of one year ; thus giving a death
rate, calculated upon the births, of 155. The corresponding rate for
the whole of London is 139.
DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
Nearly 42 per cent, of the deaths from all causes, that is to say
1,149, were those of children aged less than five years. This gives a
proportion equivalent to a rate of 64.8, calculated upon the estimated
population of young children.
ELDERLY PERSONS DEATH RATE.
The deaths of elderly persons, that is to say people over 65 years
of age, numbered 502. This gives a death rate of 104.8, calculated
upon the estimated population of persons over that age.
WEEKLY MORTALITY.
The line on the Chart " deaths from all causes " indicates the
number of deaths week by week, corrected by the inclusion of
hospital deaths and the exclusion of non-residents.
SPECIAL CAUSES OF DEATH.
The table on the next page shews mortality rates for all causes of
death, for infantile deaths, and for some of the principal diseases included
in Table IV. in the Appendix. The general and special mortality
rates are shewn as yearly averages, calculated on the deaths in
each quarter on the estimated population in the middle of 1902.
The infantile death rate for each quarter is calculated upon the
actual number of births registered in that quarter, and the yearly rate
upon the total registered births.
