BIRTH RATE.
The total number of births registered during the year was 4,589 ;
this equals a rate of 35-3 per thousand population at all ages, and is
slightly lower than that of the preceding year, which was 35.5.
The general Metropolitan birth rate is the lowest on record, and
stands at 28-5 per thousand. This figure is, as usual, six and-a-half
below our own.
