Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1892

It is seen from the above that the death-rate for the Hackney
District for the year 1892 is lower than that for the preceding
year, in spite of the enormous amount of infectious disease prevalent
during the greater part of the year. Compared with the deathrate
for all London—which was 20.7 per 1,000 in 1892—Hackney
may be said to have a low death-rate.
Infant Mortality.—Under this head is comprised the number
of deaths recorded during the year under the age of one year, and
is calculated as a rate per 1,000 of births during the same time.
There were 912 deaths under 1 year in Hackney during the
year 1892. Calculated as above, these would give a rate of 134.9
per 1,000 births; the infant mortality for the whole of London for
the same year being 154.7 per 1,000. Thus the infant mortality
of Hackney compares favourably with that for the whole of
London.
Below is given a table of the principal causes of deaths of
infants, with the numbers in the four quarters of the year.
