proportion to total births is a good criterion of the sanitary
state of a locality, other conditions being fairly equal, and in
this respect Hackney stands well, having proportionately fewer
of these deaths than Kensington, Hammersmith, Fulham,
Chelsea, Islington, Wandsworth, Camberwell and most other
metropolitan sanitary districts. This is very satisfactory when
the density and great mixture of our population as regards
sooial status are taken into consideration.
