The birth-rate in the District during the 10 years 1877-86
was 33.3 per 1,000 inhabitants, having been as high as 360 in
1879, and decreased gradually to 29.7 this year. It is somewhat
singular that a similar decrease has obtained not only for
London and all England, but also in France, where, indeed, it
has been more marked still. The decrease in Hackney has been
greater than in all England, as the highest in these 10 years in
England was 34.4 in 1877, against 36.0 in Hackney in 1879,
