Infantile Mortality.—The deaths of young children always
bear a high ratio to total deaths. There were 123 deaths of
children under 5 years old, that is 48.6 per cent. of the total
deaths. The equivalent percentage for London was 42.6.
63 children died under one year old; that is 150 per 1,000
births registered. The corresponding rate for London was
161 per thousand.
Causes of Death.—The following Table shows, in a
summary form, the amount of life saved and the amount lost
in the year 1896, as compared with the preceding decennium,
