report that the Vestry of St. George, Hanover Square,
declined to entertain the proposal that they should bear a
moiety of the cost. Bearing in mind that a portion of the
streets proposed to be lighted by electricity are situate in
their parish, and that the complete effect of the electric
lighting in St. James's Street is somewhat spoilt by the
omission of three lamps in that thoroughfare which the
Vestry, in consequence of the action of the St. George's
Vestry, decided not to erect, the action of the latter body is
the more regrettable.
A loan of £3,850 for defraying the cost of the proposed
work was obtained from the London County Council,
repayable by equal annual instalments of principal within
fifteen years, interest being charged on the amount for the
time being outstanding at 3 per cent.
The work had not quite been completed at Lady-day,
1897.
REPORT of Works Committee with reference to the
steps taken for carrying the proposal to light the
main thoroughfares of the parish with electric
Light into effect.
Your Works Committee beg to report that they have
had under consideration the reference by the Vestry of the
16th January, 1896, authorising them to take the necessary
steps for carrying the proposal to light the main thoroughfares
of the Parish with Electric Light into effect.
Your Committee deemed it advisable when the subject
was first considered to refer the matter to a Sub-Committee
to consider and report on the question.
