Report for the year 1896 made to the Vestry of Saint James's, Westminster

Reference was made in the last report to the permission
granted to the Guardians to put in window openings, door
opening and projecting landing in that portion of the
party structure between 23, Marshall Street, and the new
Back House on certain conditions, but that the agreement
had not at Lady-day, 1896, been entered into. Owing to a
difficulty in settling various points in the agreement the
matter was still unsettled at the 25th March last.
SCAVENGING, DUST REMOVAL, &c.
Under the system adopted by the Vestry, the roadsweepers
are employed and paid by the Vestry, but the
collection and removal of house dust, street refuse, &c., are
done under contract. The total cost of scavenging and
dust removal for the past year, as given in the accounts,
was £9,718 17s. 8d. compared with £8,917 for the previous
year.
The following is a statement of the number of loads
reported to have been removed from the Parish during the
year:—

The cost of Street Watering in 1895-6 was £1,268 18s. 5½d.,
and for the year ended Lady-day, 1897, was £1,505 6s. 9d.,
an increase of £236 8s. 3½d.
DUSTING AND SLOPPING.
The Special Committee appointed last year to consider
and report as to the desirability of the dusting and slopping
of the Parish being carried out by the Vestry with its own
staff and plant, have carefully considered the subject
