largely appreciated; but unfortunately during the dinnerhour
a large number of boys from neighbouring factories
resort there, and by their horse-play and roughness of
behaviour cause much annoyance to others using the
grounds and damage to the plants and shrubs placed there
by the Board; and it has been found absolutely necessary
to supplement the services of the keeper by another man
during the best part of the day to prevent the nuisance
as far as possible.
Tree Planting.
Bedford Avenue.
Application was made to your Board by the owners
of Bedford Court Mansions, the name given to the block
of buildings on the south side of Bedford Avenue
(formerly Caroline Mews) requesting that trees should be
planted on both sides of the street. On examination of
the site, however, it was found there was not sufficient
space on the south side of the road between the street
surface and the house vaults to allow of this being done,
but the request of the owners was acceded to as far as the
north side was concerned, on condition that they contributed
towards the cost. This they did to the extent of £25,
and the Board thereupon planted 15 plane trees along the
north side.
Great Russell Street.
Fifteen plane trees were also planted by the Board along
the footway on the north side of Great Russell Street, in
front of the British Museum, which footway had previously
been widened by the Board, under arrangement with the
Museum authorities.
