The surfaces of the following public-ways were flushed
twice weekly during the summer months ; the quantity of
water used amounted to 4,635,510 gallons :—

were flushed the whole year round.
Street Cleansing.
The cleansing of the public ways in the District was
performed by a staff employed directly by the Board,
numbering 50 men, consisting of one foreman, five
gangers, and 44 sweepers.
In addition to the manual labour employed, two
sweeping machines; drawn by horses, were used in
sweeping the carriage-ways.
The street sweepings carried away during the year
amounted to a total of 6,493 van-loads, equal to over
