principal diseases of the zymotic class in Inner London, was
2.48 per 1,000; in the Outer Ring 2.29; the rate in Greater
London, as a whole, being 242 per 1,000. The infantile
mortality of Greater London was 165 per 1,000 births: of
Inner London 167, of Outer London 160.
Other Large Towns.—The death-rate in the thirtythree
large towns, including London, and having a population
of 11,404,408, was 20.2 per thousand; ranging from 15.0 in
Croydon, 15.4 in Cardiff, 16.2 in Huddersfield, and 16.7 in West
Ham, to 22.8 in Preston, 23.8 in Salford, 24.6 in Manchester,
and 26.4 in Liverpool. The death rates in Edinburgh,
Glasgow, and Dublin, were 196, 216, and 308 per 1,000 respectively.
These death-rates are calculated without correction
for differences between one town and another in regard to
the age and sex-distribution of their respective populations.
This explanation is necessary because, as the Registrar-General
points out, "In consequence of the great difference between
one town and another, with respect to age and sex-constitution
of their several populations, recorded death-rates require correction
before they can be justly used for purposes of com
parison." The Registrar-General, as already stated, gives in
his annual summary, factors by the use of which the necessary
corrections can be made with approximate accuracy for each
town.
Colonial and Foreign Cities.—The death-rate in
some of the principal foreign and colonial cites was as follows—Indian
Cities: Calcutta, 35.0 per 1,000; Madras, 38.1;
and Bombay, 69.0. European Cities: Paris, 20.2 per 1,000;
St. Petersburg, 25.2; Moscow, 28.5; Berlin, 18.7; Vienna,
20.6; Rome, 17.4. American Cities: New York, 18.4 per
1,000; Boston, 20.1; Philadelphia, 18.8; San Francisco, 19.0;
and New Orleans, 26.3.
