question of providing a Refuse Destructor or other equally practical
and efficient means of dealing with the rapidly increasing mass of
house and trade refuse.
Gipsy Encampments,
During the year numerous complaints have been received as to
the nuisance caused by gipsies encamping on vacant land in close
proximity to dwelling houses.
Owing to the absence of statutory powers dealing directly with
this class of nuisance, very great trouble has been experienced in having
the caravans removed. It is most desirable that the efforts of your
Board to obtain effective legislation in this direction will result in
ridding the district of this intolerable nuisance.
Scotland Green.
A house to house inspection and an exhaustive examination of
the drainage of this part of the district has been made within the past
year, numerous defects and insanitary conditions have been discovered,
the remedying of which will effect a material improvement.
Removal of Bodies to Mortuary.
The arrangements for removing bodies to your Mortuary have
undergone considerable improvement. A hearse is now provided for
this purpose instead of your ambulance, which was made use of in the
past. A register is now kept in which all particulars relating to the
removal of each body to and from the Mortuary are entered, and no
effort is spared to perfect as far as possible the important work in
connection with this branch of my department.

The number of houses inspected for the detection of waste of
water was 2,279.

New service pipes were laid on to 80 houses.
New fire plugs were fixed in 40 cases.
The service pipes to 51 old houses were renewed.
460 yards of mains were laid.
449 yards of mains were re-laid.
