Births.
The Births registered in the Parish during the year 1894
numbered 1876, of these 487 children were born in the City of
London Lying-in Hospital, but as only 43 of the mothers were
permanent residents of the Parish of St. Luke, a deduction of
444 has to be made from the total number, leaving 1432 as the
actual number of Births to be credited to the Parish, and after
allotting 43 to the several districts of the Parish in which the
parents resided, the Births of the respective sub-districts were as
follows :—
In the City Road Sub-Registration District there were 1077.
In the Whitecross Street Sub-Registration District there
were 258, and in the Finsbury Sub-Registration District there
were 97. In relation to the estimated popidation the figures
stand as under :—

By comparing the above figures with those which relate to the
three preceding years it will be seen that the number of Births,
which had been gradually decreasing, last year showed a slight
increase, due no doubt to the circumstance that the Artizans'
Dwellings, now so numerous in the Parish, are occupied by
persons at the period of life when the families are on the increase.
In support of this view I may refer to the Report of the
Trustees of the Peabody Donation Fund for the year 1894, in
which it is stated that the Birth Rate in their Dwellings for the
year reached 36.3 per 1,000, being 6.3 per 1,000 above that of
London for the same period, while the death rate, including those
who died in Hospitals, was 15.7 per 1,000, or 2.0 below the
average of London.
