In England and Wales the population is estimated at
38,431,586 persons. During the year 914,182 births were
registered, equal to a birth-rate of 30.7 per 1,000.
The natural increase of population by excess of births over deaths was 344,308.

From the returns of the census 1891, the registered
deaths in the ten years 1881-90, were 8,941, against 13,460
births registered during the same period.

Of these, 361 were males and 350 females.
