GENERAL SANITARY WORK.
A large number of notices and proceedings were taken
with respect to underground rooms, overcrowding, unwholesome
food, disposal and removal of offensive refuse, and
breaches of the Bye-Laws, etc., the details of which will be
found in the Medical Officer's Report.
SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACTS.
On the 9th May, 1893, Mr. James Kear Colwell was reappointed
Analyst. During the year 266 samples were
purchased and analysed. In 52 cases the samples were
adulterated, but in 16 instances the adulteration was not of
such a serious character to justify any proceedings being
taken; in all other cases proceedings were taken, and
the fines and costs I'ecovered amounted to the sum of
£25 16s. Od. In 3 cases proceedings were taken for refusing
to sell samples, and for giving false warranties. The
Analyst's report will be found on page 58.
Flushing of Water Closets.
In the year 1892 the attention of the Local Government
Board was directed to the necessity for an alteration of the
regulations made under the Metropolis "Water Act, 1871,
with regard to the capacity of water waste-preventing
cisterns; communications were addressed to every Sanitary
Authority in the County of London, but only in two or
three instances were they of the opinion of the Board—viz.,
that the present size of water waste-preventing cisterns is
insufficient, and that cisterns which are capable of discharging
at least three gallons of water at each flush should
be substituted.
