To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch.
Gentlemen,
I beg to present the report on the public health, sanitary condition,
and vital statistics, of the parish, for the year ending December 31st, 1893,
during which period I have had the honour of performing the duties of Medical
Officer of Health for the parish.
The parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, has an extent of 648 acres. It is
irregularly triangular in shape, bounded on the north and north-east by
Hackney, on the north-west by Islington, on the west by St. Luke's, on the
south by the City, and on the east by Bethnal Green, all very densely populated
parishes. Generally, the district is flat and lies from '20 to 30 feet above the
sea-level. The soil is gravel, varying in depth and overlying the London clay,
which is met with from 15 to 20 feet below the surface.

The following table, which is taken from the last census reports, compares
the numbers of inhabited houses and the populations of the different wards of
the parish in l891 with those in 1881.
