that standard was, in the whole Parish, 164, the
decennial mean-rate being 143 per 1,000 births registered.
Last year's rate was the highest recorded
since 1885 (see Table II. in the Appendix). The
infantile mortality in London was 165 per 1,000
births registered in 1895, the decennial mean rate
being 153, whilst in England and Wales, last year's
rate was 161, and the decennial mean rate 146.
In St. Mary's District the infantile mortality was 168
per 1,000 births registered in the district, compared
with a rate of 142 for 1894, and in St. John's District,
last year's rate was 141, and that for 1894, 94.
To Table 19 (a continuation of Table 13 in the
report for 1894) two columns have been added,
giving the deaths at the various ages, under 5 years,
in 1893 and 1894. The distribution of the causes
of death will be dealt with later on (See page 90).
CAUSES OF DEATH.
The rates of mortality given in Table 20 have
been obtained from the numbers given in Table III.
in the Appendix.
With but few exceptions the rates for 1895 were
higher than those for 1894, the only year available
for comparison. The greatest increase among the
sub-groups is shown in the rate from Diseases
of the Respiratory System (Paddington, col. P.)
—2.60 in 1894, 3.65 in 1895; the increase from
Diarrhoeal Diseases being next—0.37 in 1894,
