rates for England and Wales, both for last year and
for the decennium, were practically equal.
The uncorrected death-rate for Paddington was
last year 1.5 per 1,000 below the rate for London,
and 0.4 below that for England and Wales. The
foregoing comparison, however, ignores all consideration
of the differences in the age and sex
constitution of the various populations. The
effects of such differences have been determined,
and the necessary "correction factors" calculated.
The corrected death-rates obtained by the use of
these factors are set out below:—
Comparison of Death-rates.
1895.
Standard rate Recorded rate. "Corrected" rate.
England and Wales 19.15 18.7 18.7
London 17.96 19.8 21.1
Paddington 17.72 18.3 19.8
The "natural increment" i.e., excess of births
over deaths, in Paddington amounted to 880 lives
last year, as compared with a decennial average of
996. The increment was equal to 0.71 per cent,
of the estimated population, the percentage for
1894 having been 0.81. The natural increment in
London was equal to 1.06 per cent, of the estimated
population last year, and l.23 in 1894, whilst in
England and Wales the increments in 1895 and 1894
were, respectively, equal to 1.16 and 1.29 per cent.
AGE-GROUP DEATH-RATES.
Tables 18 and 19 continue the series of returns,
showing the deaths and death-rates for the vario usagegroups,
distinguishing the sexes, in the whole Parish,
and its two sub-districts. Inasmuch as this series
was only commenced in the report for 1894, it has
not as yet much value as a basis of comparison.
