year for which a similar Table exists is 1894, the
figures for which year are set out in the two last
columns of Table VII.
Table 29 has been compiled from certain of the
Tables in the Registrar-General's Annual Summary,
and shows some of the chief variations during last
year from the averages for different periods of
years.
In spite of the phenomenal winter, the mean
temperature for the year was only 00.1 below the
average for the preceding 54 years. The variations
from the mean for different periods, divided off by
changes between excess and defect therefrom, are
set out in Table 30. The greatest variation in
defect from the mean was shown during the ten
days February 5th—14th, when the mean daily
temperature was on an average 160.6 below the
average mean temperature for those days. On
May 13th the mean day temperature was 150.3
above the average for the day, and there were
excesses to as nearly a large amount on May 30th
(130.8), May 12th (130.7), and December 30th
(13°.1).
The mean temperature of the air was phenomenal
in January (33°"8)—the lowest since 1881,
in February 280,9—the lowest since 1771, in
June (610,4)—which has been exceeded on twelve
occasions only since 1771, in September (620-2)—
which has been exceeded twice only since 1771,
