POPULATION.
At the Census of April, 1891, the total population
of the Parish was found to be 117,846 persons, viz. :
48,547 males, and 69,299 females. In 1881 the
population was 107,058 persons, so that the increase
during the ten years appeared to have been 10,788
persons. It is, however, probable that the population
of certain parts of the Parish, notably that of the
Sub-District of St. John, was under-estimated at the
date of the last Census, by reason of its nearness to
Easter. After the lapse of nearly four years it is
almost useless to enter into this question, but that
possible source of error should be borne in mind, when
considering the various rates given for this Sub-District.
The population of the Sub-District of St. Mary
increased during the ten years, 1881-91, from 69,728
to 84,159 persons, whilst that of St. John (apparently)
decreased from 37,330 to 33,687. Owing to the
combined influence of this increase and decrease, it
has been found to be more convenient to calculate the
estimated populations for the two sub-districts, and
obtain that of the whole Parish from them, than to
calculate that for the Parish by a single operation, as
is the usual custom. The total for the Parish at the
middle of 1894 obtained by this method, was 121,500
