SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS, AND THE MARGARINE
ACTS.
Milk. — Eighteen samples were taken ; ten were genuine, one
contained 5 per cent, of added water, hut was in other
respects good, and no proceedings were advised by the
Analyst. In another case the milk contained 10 per
cent, of added water, but before the summons came to
the hearing the defendant had closed the shop and gone
away. Two other samples were adulterated, one with
12 per cent, and the other with 20 per cent, of added
water. In the first case a penalty of 40s. and 12s. 6d.
costs was inflicted, and in the other case 20*. and 12s.
6d. costs.
Four other summonses were taken out; but owing to a
recent decision in the High Court they were defective,
and were withdrawn.
Mustard.— Four samples were taken, and were all found to be
genuine.
Pepper.— Four samples were taken, and were allfound to be genuine.
Butter.— Twenty - six samples were taken ; thirteen were genuine ;
of the remainder, one was adulterated with 70 per cent,
of margarine, but as the offence was only that the letters
on the label were too small, the vendor was cautioned.
The rest were composed as follows:—
Adulterated with margarine 80 per cent , fined 10/- and 12/6 costs.
