The basis of all statistical calculations is an enumerated
or estimated population, and taking the censal (enumerated)
populations for Lambeth during 1881 and 1891, by logarithms
we are able to calculate the estimated populations
for 1895, not only for the Parish as a whole, but also for
the Registration Sub-districts, and the Parliamentary
Divisions or new Wards. Further, these populations can
be sub-divided into various age periods, and according to sex.
Upon these estimated Lambeth populations all the 1895
rates in the present Report have been calculated, and compared
with those for London; whilst the total populations
have been carefully corrected, and worked out, for the last
40 years for future use. The populations are all (censal
years included) estimated to the middle of each year, a
constant rate of growth being assumed from census to
census, and the 1881—91 growth being carried on to 1895,
in the case of the totals. The males and females, and the
age periods, are on the hypothesis of a constant rate of
change in the sex and age proportions of the population
from census to census (these proportions being taken as
constant since 1891).
The populations in the Registration Sub-districts, and in
the Parliamentary Divisions or new Wards, are on the
hypothesis that the changes in the proportion of each to the
total have gone on since 1891 as during the decennium
1881—91.
Fortunately, the figures of the new quinquennial Census
taken March 29th, 1896, in accordance with the provisions
of the Equalisation of Rates (London) Act, enable me to
re-calculate and correct the figures for 1891—96, though
it is to be regretted that this quinquennial Census gives no
particulars as to sex and age-periods.
