WHOOPING COUGH AND MEASLES.
During 1895, 132 and 151 were registered from whooping
cough and measles respectively, as compared with 110
and 182 during 1894, and annual averages of 166 and 147
for the last ten years (1885 to 1894) respectively.
In London, during 1895, there were registered 1483 and 2633 deaths respectively, from whooping cough and measles, giving corresponding death-rates of 3.4 and 6.0 per 10,000 living.

In both diseases the Inner Districts have suffered more
severely than the Outer Districts—in whooping cough the
ratio being as 3 to 1; in measles as 4.5 to 1. These results
were to be expected, considering the more insanitary and
the more crowded the dwellings, and the poorer the
inhabitants of the former compared with the latter districts.
The Table on page 36 shows the seasonal mortality
incidences of these two diseases—whooping cough at its
height in the second, and measles in the fourth, quarter
of the year.
