SMALLPOX.
During 1895, two deaths (both unvaccinated children)
were registered in Lambeth from smallpox, as compared
with one during 1894, and an annual average of 9.6 for the
last ten years (1885 to 1894). Fifty-one cases were
notified during 1895, as compared with 26 during 1894, and
an annual average of 33 for the five years 1890 to 1894.
The deaths took place in the third and fourth quarters of
the year respectively. Of the 51 cases notified, 43 were
removed to Hospital and 8 were treated at their own
homes.
The case mortality for the year is, therefore, 3.9%,
varying from 4.7% to 0% according as the cases were
treated at hospital or at home respectively—the absence of
mortality amongst the home-treated cases being due either
to their mildness, or to the fact probably that some of them
were not smallpox. The age and sex incidence and
mortality for smallpox cases notified in Lambeth during
1895 are as follows:—
