INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Of the 5,559 deaths 1,420 were infants under one year
of age, giving a proportion of 152 (corrected) per 1,000
births, the uncorrected rate being 156.3. The chief causes
of these deaths were diarrhoea, premature birth, convulsions,
bronchitis and pneumonia, whooping cough, atrophy, inanition
and debility. This method of expressing the infantile
mortality in the terms of the infantile population (i.e., per
1,000 births), is more trustworthy than estimating the
number of infants living at the time from the censal
returns, the ages of infants under one year being frequently
incorrectly returned (generally understated). Table I
gives the infantile mortality in different towns in England
and Wales, etc., for the purpose of comparison; whilst in
the various Registration Sub-Districts of Lambeth the
infantile mortality is found to vary from 307 per 1,000 births
in Lambeth Church First to 118 in Norwood (the low rate
of 90 per 1,000 births in Waterloo Road Second, being
explainable by the fact that this Sub-District contains the
General Lying-in Hospital), thus:—
