21st; and of the lowest readings by night (25.5, 453, 53.8,
and 40.3) in the weeks ended January 7th, April 15th, September
23rd, November llth, and December 30th. The
hottest week was that which ended August 19th (mean temperature
73 6) and the coldest week that which ended January
7th (mean temperature 25.5). August was the hottest month
(mean temperature 65.5). January was the coldest month
(mean temperature 35.4). June exhibited the greatest range
in temperature, viz., 537; from 91'0 to 37.3; and November
the smallest range, viz., 32.6; from 60.0 to 27.4. Rain fell on
154 days, the total amount registered in the year being 20.13
inches, and 4.98 inches less than the average of 78 years.
Most rain fell in October (4T6 inches), and least in April
(012). The means of the readings of the barometer were
29 815 inches; the means of April 29 990, and of February
29.542, being the highest and lowest, respectively. The
relative proportion of wind was, North, 75; East, 83; South,
107 ; and West, 100.
VACCINATION.
Table X. (Appendix) is a return respecting vaccination
in 1892—the return for 1893 is not yet complete—compiled
by Mr. Shattock, the Vaccination Officer, whose energetic
discharge of the duties of his appointment it is always a
pleasing duty to recognise. The return shows a loss of 8.7
percent. on the total number of births—against 5.4, 5.9, 6.0,
6.5, 6.7, and 8 0, in the preceding six years respectively—
"from removal of children to places, out of the Parish,
unknown, or which cannot be reached, and cases not having
been found." In England and Wales, we were told a few years
back, on the authority of the then Medical Officer of the Local
Government Board, "that the returns give evidence of about
95 per cent. of the infantile population having received the
benefits of vaccination within the first year " after their birth;
