DEATH.RATES IN LONDON, ENGLAND AND
WALES, AND FOREIGN CITIES.
Before entering upon details with respect to the causes
of death in Kensington, I may mention, by way of comparison
with our local mortality.rates, that the death.rate in
England and Wales in 1893 was 19.2 per 1000, corresponding
with the mean rate in the ten years 1883.92. The rate
in London, as already stated, was 21.3 per 1000, and was 0.9
above the decennial average, 20.4.
The subjoined table shews the annual death.rate per 1000 persons living, in each of the last eleven years, in Kensington, in London, and in England and Wales:–

The Registrar.General in his Annual Summary has a
table shewing diminution or excess of deaths in 1893, compared
with annual deaths in 1883.92, corrected for increase of population.
From this we learn that there was a diminution in the
number of deaths from small.pox (97), measles (1,053), typhus
(16), whooping.cough (443), simple fever (36), phthisis and
other tubercular diseases (917), diseases of nervous system
(498) andhomicide(17),the total diminution being 3,077,against
14,720, 3,762, 4,712 and 4,453 in the preceding four years.
On the other hand there was an excess under several heads,
viz., scarlet fever (449), influenza (970), diphtheria (1,985),
enteric fever (10), diarrhceal diseases (391), cancer (374),
premature birth (365), diseases of circulatory system (403)
