THIRTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
Being for the Year 1893.
To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington.
Gentlemen,
The vital and mortal statistics in the present report
have been compiled, as usual, for the fifty-two weeks of the
Registration year, which in 1893 terminated on the 30th
December. In other respects, the report is for the official
year ended March 25th, 1894.
In the report for 1891 I gave my reasons for believing
that the population of the parish, as enumerated at the
Census in April, 1891, during the currency of the Easter holidays
and the Parliamentary vacation, was considerably below
the true normal number. At the same time, I stated that I had
felt it to be my duty to adopt the official figures for statistical
purposes, a course which involved the recasting of all calculations
of birth and death-rates, &c., for each of the preceding
ten years. I need not repeat here the grounds for my opinion as
to the deficiencies of the Census figures: it will suffice to refer
to the report for 1891 in which they are set out with all needful
detail
