Common)" be purchased as a site for a Fever Hospital."
Opposition was made to the proposal, and the Local
Government Board, after a public inquiry, informed the
Managers that they could not assent to the proposed purchase.
Subsequently, the Board sanctioned the purchase of 31 acres
of land at Tooting Graveney, on which the Managers are
about to erect the "Fountain" Hospital for about 500
fever patients, having already built on a part of the site a
temporary hospital for about 400 patients, some account of
which will be found at page 130. The Local Government
Board have further sanctioned the purchase of a site at Hither
Green, in the Parish of Lewisham, whereon the "Park"
Hospital for about 500 patients is to be erected at a cost of
some .£200,000, the site, which comprises an area of 20 acres,
having cost £23,500. Lastly, the Board have sanctioned the
acquisition at a cost of £17,000 of about 31 acres of land at
Shooters Hill, Woolwich, on which the "Brook" Hospital
for 500 patients is to be erected for the service of the extreme
south-eastern part of the Metropolis. The inhabitants of the
several localities raised strong opposition to the use of the
above mentioned sites for hospital purposes, and it was not
until after local public inquiry in each case that the Local
Government Board sanctioned their acquisition.
The Managers were not so fortunate in their efforts to
secure a site at Upper Norwood, for a Convalescent Fever
Hospital. Provisional arrangements had been made for the
purchase of some 47 acres of land in that locality known as
the "Grangewood" Estate; but the Local Government
Board, after a public inquiry, declined to sanction the proposed
purchase, which had been opposed not only by local residents,
but also by the Crystal Palace Company, the London, Brighton
and South Coast Railway Company, and the Corporation of
the Borough of Croydon.
