94. Of these deaths 42, or 44 per cent., occurred within 48
hours after admission. The total mortality was 38.13 per cent.
The enteric fever admissions numbered 56: 47 cases were
discharged and 9 died; a mortality of 16.1 percent. Of other
diseases 144 cases were admitted: 135 were discharged and 7
died; a mortality of 4.91 per cent. The scarlet fever cases
were, on the whole, of a more severe type than in 1892. Postscarlatinal
diphtheria was diagnosed in 30 patients, all of
whom save 5 died. Four cases in one ward contracted smallpox
after admission : the source of the infection could not be
traced. The miscellaneous diseases constituted 6.2 per cent.
of the total admissions. Three cases certified as scarlet fever,
were found to have small-pox ; and of the cases certified to be
suffering from diphtheria, 79 were afterwards diagnosed as
tonsillitis. During the year 13 members of the staff (including
two Assistant Medical Officers) suffered from infectious
diseases, viz., 8 from scarlet fever, two from diphtheria, two
from enteric fever, and one from small-pox. All recovered—
the Medical Officers after very severe attacks of scarlet fever
and diphtheria, respectively. The admissions of cases from
Kensington included 345 of scarlet fever, 42 of diphtheria, 6 of
enteric fever, and 17 of other diseases: total 410. The deaths
of Kensington parishioners numbered 42, a mortality of about
10 per cent. The Medical Superintendent concludes his
report with a statement of the considerable improvements that
have already been carried out at the Western Hospital, to
which allusion will be found at page 116, and with
a reference to the further accommodation for cases of
diphtheria, and for isolation purposes, for which it is proposed
to make provision.
At Other Hospitals of the Managers, 282 cases
were admitted from this parish, viz., at the North-Western
Hospital (Hampstead) 206 cases, including scarlet fever
113, diphtheria 87, enteric fever 4, and "other diseases " 2:
