MEASLES.
To this disease were ascribed 97 deaths, of which 72 occurred in
the fourth quarter. The Measles death-rate was equal to 0.28 per 1,000
inhabitants.
These deaths were 114 below the corrected average for the twelve
years 1885-96, and were less than those registered in any one of these
years with the exception of 1886.
Indeed, were it not for events that occurred subsequent to the
close of the third quarter of the year it would have been unnecessary
to have commented on the returns of the year, which, taken as a whole,
were entirely satisfactory. But this matter will be referred to later on.
