DEATHS.
There were 5,263 deaths registered during the year, compared with
6,891 in the preceding year, so that the returns showed a decrease of
1,128.
These deaths were equal to an annual death-rate of 15.85 per 1,000
inhabitants, which is the lowest annual death-rate that I can find any
record of in the Parish. In this connection it may be noted that the
death-rate of Islington since 1851 has been, for decennial periods, as
follows :—
1841-50 19.0 per 1,000 inhabitants.
1851-60 21.0 „ „ „
1861-70 22.0 „ „ „
1871-80 21.9 „ „ „
1881-90 18.5 „ „ „
Thus it will be seen that there has been a steady improvement in the
death-rate since 1861, and this, too, despite the fact that the Parish has,
decade by decade, steadily become more and more crowded.
At the present time Islington is more than four times more densely
populated than it was in 1840. I have calculated that
In 1841-50 there were 0.041 acres to every inhabitant
„ 1851-60 „ 0.025 „ „ „
„ 1861-70 „ 0.017 „ „ „
„ 1871-80 „ 0.013 „ „ „
„ 1881-90 „ 0.010 „ „ „
Yet, in spite of this ever increasing aggregation of people, it says a great
deal for sanitation that it has not only prevented the death-rate from
becoming higher, but has actually reduced it, so that in 1894 it was as
low as 15.85,
