throat, and would avoid any delay which might be caused

Table XIV. gives the work carried out by your Inspectors
during the past year arranged in tabular form under the
head of each Inspector. The total number of house to house
inspections amounted to 6,206, as compared with 6,902 in
1898. The complaints numbered 1,155, while the inspections
made in consequence of such complaints amounted to 1,381.
The diminution in the house to house inspections is accounted
for by the fact that Inspector Stevenson was superannuated at
the end of June, and in consequence of Inspector Groom being
appointed Inspector under the Food and Drugs Act before his
successor was appointed, I took him off house to house work so
that he only attended to complaints and fevers, in addition to
carrying out his new duties. The complaints, as nearly as
possible, amount to the same number as last year.
There was an increase of over 1,000 in the number of
inspections of new buildings, and as I have before pointed out
their supervision takes up much time, which is only to be
realised by those who have to do with work of this sort.
As a result of the house to house inspections, the complaints
referred to above and the occurrence of infectious
disease, 4,678 intimations were served, followed up in 987
instances by statutory notices, 36 of which referred to houses
let in lodgings. Furthermore, in 142 cases it was necessary
to issue summonses to enforce the requirements of the
Committee.
There were 508 inspections of cowhouses and dairies and
slaughter houses, excluding the inspection made by myself of
each of these premises. All our requirements were satisfactorily
complied with before the meeting of the Licensing Committee
of the London County Council, so that in no case had
we to offer any opposition to the renewal of the license.
There were 311 inspections of bakehouses.
The superannuation of Inspector Stevenson left his
district at our disposal, and I have partitioned it between
