Drs. Down and Bulstrode, of the Local Government Board, as to
the advisability of adopting any special measures for protecting
the public health.
"The water which is used for domestic purposes, is drawn
from a well situated in one of the courtyards of the Workhouse,
is now undergoing examination, both chemical and bacteriological,
and will be reported upon in a few days.
"There is an old brick drain running through the courtyard,
within fourteen feet of the well, which has been opened, and is
now being tested with a view to find out whether leakage has
occurred.
"Meanwhile, proper sanitary measures are being taken to
protect the health of the inmates.
"The water of the Kent Water Company is now being used in
place of the well water, and the drains have been well flushed
with carbolic and sulphurous acids.
"There is no evidence of any great amount of Diarrhœa
existing in the district outside the Workhouse.
"I have taken the precaution of having samples of water
drawn from the Pump in the Market, and also from the Baths
and Wash-houses, in order to have them forwarded for analysis.
"The health of the district has not been affected by the
outbreak in the Workhouse, and I believe that, so far as that
Institution is concerned, the worst is over.
" (Signed) Charles Henry Hartt,
"Medical Officer.
