11.1 per cent. of the samples examined were adulterated, against
12.6 per cent. in 1896 and 7.6 per cent. in 1897.
One sample was obtained for every 498 of the population as
compared with one for every 410 persons in London in 1897.
In July Mr. E. G. Clayton resigned his position as Public Analyst,
and Mr. H. Cecil Cribb, B.Sc. Lond., F.1.C., was appointed in his place.
Arrangements have now been made to submit 350 samples a year
for analysis.
Prosecutions were instituted by the Vestry in the following cases :—
